When you’re checking out new apartments to live in, it’s always nice to try out some of the nearby restaurants. While we definitely have an idea about a couple of places in the Dogpatch, I kept noticing Wooly Pig. They advertise Asian sandwiches, including Banh Mi, so I knew it was somewhere I wanted to try. And try we did at the start of a long day of looking at apartments.
Wooly Pig is a counter order restaurant that does breakfast and lunch. While they have several sandwiches on the menu, there are also other Asian favorites such as udon and jook on the menu. A couple of the sandwiches jumped out at us, so we ordered the roasted pork banh mi ($12) and the Kahlua pulled pork sandwich ($15). All the sandwiches come with shrimp chips or salad, or with an additional fee, sweet potato fries or soup.
I’m also a sucker for Vietnamese coffee, so I ordered one and we sat down with our number to wait for our sandwiches. It’s not a large place, so while the place was pretty full, we did not have trouble snagging the last table available in the early afternoon. They also provide a very cute wooly pig number for the table. My coffee took a little while to get (which was odd, because they were premade and only needed ice), but it was really tasty. Sometimes Vietnamese coffee can be overly sweet, but this was just the right combination of creamy, sweet and bitter. I was really happy with it!
But how were the sandwiches? First off, they were huge! Neither of us left hungry. The banh mi was really tasty and full of pork flavor. I really enjoyed the pulled pork sandwich I ordered. I didn’t get a whole lot of Kahlua flavor, but perhaps it’s just there to add some sweetness. It also had some flamin’ hot Cheetos on it, which really added some crunch and quite a bit of heat. It was unusual, but I really was a fan. We got the shrimp chips on the side as they are basically what we would call prawn crackers in the UK. They aren’t that easy to find here, but Wooly Pig makes them deliciously with some seaweed and sesame seeds sprinkled on top. All in all, the sandwiches were really enjoyable and filling!
I definitely am a fan of Wooly Pig, as it’s one of the best sandwich places I’ve eaten at in the city. The prawn crackers on the side were just the icing on the cake. I think I’ll definitely be back, maybe to try out the breakfast or non-sandwich lunch items. But if you’re in the area and need a hearty lunch, I highly recommend checking them out! And during this time of sheltering at home, Wooly Pig is offering takeout for breakfast and lunch, so it’s really easy to give them a try!
Score: 4.5/5
Recommendation: Definitely get the shrimp chips on the side! And probably just whichever sandwich floats your boat!
