As I try so many burgers around San Francisco, I do try to find those that stand out some how. So far, the biggest stand out has been with Black Sands Brewery as their burger was delicious, their fries were fantastic and the price really good for what you’re getting. This time, I’m checking out Split, Burger Joint and Prospect to see if one of their burgers is going to be the best!
1. Split
I have seen Split in several places in Soma and their sign promising burgers always interested me, so finally one day I stopped in for lunch to give it a try. I went for the Reserve Burger with Tallegio cheese, bacon, caramelized onions and a horseradish sauce because I pretty much love all those things. I also went for a side of Split sweet potato fries (with Parmesan cheese and herbs). The burger itself was pretty decent, but still nothing really wowed me about it. The fries were also nice, but not great. It seems like a decent place to grab a bite to eat if you’re out and about, but burger-wise, it’s sadly nothing really special.
2. Burger Joint
After a day of brunch drinking and day drinking, I needed some food before heading home from the Mission, so I stopped into Burger Joint to give their burger a try. I got the bacon burger with avocado with some fries and a root beer float. The burger was again, nothing really amazing. It’s hard to justify coming here for a burger when Wes Burger ‘n’ More is just around the corner as their burgers and sides are definitely superior. However, the root beer float was pretty spectacular as the vanilla ice cream they serve really hit the spot!
3. Prospect
I walk by Prospect quite a bit, and I keep getting enticed by the burger on the menu, but it is quite expensive. (Especially if you want a side of fries, and who doesn’t?) But, after a pretty terrible few weeks, I decided I was just going to go in for lunch and splurge and give it a try. I ordered the burger with cheddar cheese and a side of fries. This is by far the most expensive burger to date (as the total for the burger and fries was $22.50 and if I had ordered bacon it would have been even more)! I was really hoping that given the price, the burger was going to be fantastic, but it really didn’t meet my expectations. It was pretty good, but considering Epic Steak is just down the street, it’s definitely not really worth coming in for the burger. Especially since the bun didn’t really hold up to the burger juices and started disintegrating and making it hard to eat. I will say that the fries were probably some of the best ones I’ve eaten since moving to San Francisco. They were thick and slightly crisp on the outside with a light, fluffy center. It even rivaled some of the chips I’ve had in the UK, and that’s saying something!
Winner: Black Sands Brewery
Black Sands Brewery still holds strong as the winning burger on the list. I’ve also decided to shorten the rankings to the top ten burgers, as it was starting to get slightly difficult to differentiate between average burger places. The only burger this week to barely make it into the top ten is Prospect. While the burger wasn’t fantastic (especially for the price), the fries do push it up slightly over Bartlett Hall so it has been knocked off the list. Will Black Sands Brewery manage to survive yet another round? You’ll have to see in Part 8.
