I’m still searching for the best burger in San Francisco, and this time I tried out burgers from Me So Hungry, Perry’s and Biergarten. Will any of them beat out the fantastic burger from Comstock Saloon that was still winning last time?
1. Me So Hungry
I was very tempted to give this place a pass given the quasi-racist name of the food truck, but what if it turns out to be the best burger in the city? So I decided to get the Monster Burger with grass-fed beef, bacon, cheddar cheese, lettuce, tomato and Asian BBQ sauce. I also opted to get a side of sweet potato fries to go with it. It took a while to get my burger, so it felt like they were definitely spending some love and attention into making it. When I got it home, it looked pretty fantastic, and I really wanted to dig in. While the toppings were fresh, the bun was hearty and the bacon was crispy and salty, the burger patty itself was not as flavorful as I was hoping. I also wasn’t a fan of the Asian BBQ sauce, as it was just a bit too sweet and didn’t really go with the rest of the burger. The fries were just okay as well. Everything just fell a bit flat for me in the taste department.
2. Perry’s
Perry’s is a San Francisco institution, celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, so it seemed like a fitting time to stop in and give the Perry’s Burger a try. I ordered the cheeseburger with pepper jack and fries for around $16.50. The burger looked pretty good when it came out, but sadly, the burger itself wasn’t that exciting (especially for the price). While the patty was thick, it was very firm without a lot of beefy flavor. The toppings were quite fresh though, and the bun was tasty and held up well. The fries were perfect though, and I really devoured them.
3. Biergarten
The last burger I tried this time was at Biergarten. My burger club was looking for something interesting to try, and we found out about the secret burger they only serve on Wednesday at Biergarten. So we headed over on an amazingly sunny evening to give it a try. Of course, given the weather, the queue was very long. As the first one there, I hopped in. Eventually, other people showed up, but I was still waiting! So we finally decided to order enough burgers for everyone so they wouldn’t also have to wait for 40 minutes. Now as someone who hates waiting, I was kind of ready to hate on the burger. But honestly, it was pretty tasty. The burger was nice, thick and juicy, but the bun was solid enough to keep it from falling apart (at least until close to the end). There were also mushrooms on top of the burger, and I’m a great fan. I definitely enjoyed it, but sadly, in the rush, we forgot to order sides so I wasn’t completely satisfied when we left for the night.
Winner: Comstock Saloon
Comstock Saloon is still my favorite burger around, hands down. I did enjoy the burger from Biergarten though, and I would definitely go back on a cold day when there was no line in order to have it again, so it comes in low on the list. The other two burgers were kind of average, and they weren’t burgers I would go out of my way to try again.
