Seriously. My obsession with Detroit-style pizza is running wild! Sunset Squares has been getting a lot of buzz in the recent months, and they went from small pop-up to churning out some serious pizza. I was also intrigued because of unusual pizza toppings they were serving. Several were korean style, which I have had from other pizza places, but a clam chowder pizza? That sounded new. The pizza that seemed to be getting rave reviews was the Mapo Tofu Pizza ($28) with house-made Mapo Tofu, tokyo turnips, and sichuan peppercorn. The pizzas are all made with their sourdough pizza dough that takes days to proof, so if you are looking for the full menu, ordering in advance is a must.
The pizza looked really amazing when it arrived, with the addition of the pickled turnips and some white sauce on top. And the flavors were phenomenal. The spice was pretty spot on and the pickled turnips just added a nice bit of acid to the cheesy pizza. The crust was also perfectly done. I can’t really think of anything I would change.
They also have thinner pizzas on the menu, so perhaps we can give one of those a try as well. Although to be honest, their Sunday only burger looks like something I may need to order for The Great Burger Hunt. If you’re looking for a Detroit-style pizza with a very San Francisco spin, I think Sunset Squares might be for you!
