I first saw Sixth Course on my way to check out the new Dandelion chocolate factory. My friend was in town and wanted to go look at all the chocolate, but we happened to walk down the street that Sixth Course was on. It’s a tiny dessert shop in the Mission, and it’s quite easy to miss. In fact, we weren’t even sure if it was open when we walked by (it was). The cakes and treats inside looked spectacular, but we had already eaten a ridiculously large lunch, and cake just seemed like it was an impossibility at the time. But I vowed to return one day to try one of the fantastic looking desserts in the case.
That day finally arrived, and I decided to have a cup of coffee and something sweet. It was a tough decision, as they have three different cases filled with a variety of desserts. One is frozen treats, one with cakes and finally a third with macarons and truffles. I wanted to try everything, but I knew that I really should make a decision and try the thing that most jumped out at me.
I finally decided on the carrot cake. It was more of a cheesecake with a bit of a carrot cake base, but it looked absolutely gorgeous so I didn’t really care. I also got a cappuccino to go with it. I thought the cake was really tasty. The cream cheese was not overly sweet, and the cake base was delicious. Overall, the cake was definitely a winner in my book, even if it was on the spendy side.
Would I recommend Sixth Course? Definitely! They have an unusual selection of desserts that are definitely better than your standard dry, sugary cupcakes that seem to be overcrowding the specialty dessert scene. I definitely saw other things I would want to try, from ice cream to macarons. I’ll be back sometime, perhaps with a few other people so we can try a selection!
Score: 4/5
Recommendation: Try one of the fantastic looking cakes!
