I love pie. There I said it. Pie is the best part of Thanksgiving. Fight me! The magic of a filling inside of a flaky pastry just fills me with joy, whether the filling is sweet or savory! So when I heard that Angela Pinkerton from Che Fico was doing a pandemic pie pop-up, I knew I was going to have to try it. I was very tempted the one time I went to Theorita (before it closed), but their burger really filled me up, and I always planned on going back for pie. I never made it.
It’s a fairly simple process. Go online and choose a location from San Francisco or the East Bay for pick-up. Then choose a location, choose a pie, and choose a pickup date. Pre-pay and pick up on your day! It really couldn’t be easier. My pie of choice? Passionfruit with bay leaf meringue. I love a lemon meringue and passionfruit meringue sounded heavenly.
It was not a standard pastry pie crust, but instead crumbled ginger biscuits which added quite a nice element to the pie. Meringue pies can be quite sweet, but the meringue layer was small. I was worried that there may be too much of a passionfruit layer, but there was that third bay leaf cream layer. To be honest, I think I would have prefered more meringue and more passionfruit so the whole pie had a bit more zing, but it was a damn good pie!
I’m definitely tempted to get another in the future. Why not? We’re in the middle of a global pandemic, so pie clearly seems like something to get me through the days! The pies available seem like they are constantly changing, so there are always new options available!
