I had a bit of a stretch of eating alone, so I decided it would be the perfect opportunity to try out a new pizza place and give their Detroit-style pizza a go, mostly because the other member of the household is not a fan of the thick crust that style requires. I’m not sure why, I love how thick and fluffy and crispy it gets, but to each their own. Pie Punks looked ideal to try out as they had an interesting selection of toppings, plus their website looks like the website of an 18-year old kid in 1999. (I kid you not, check it out.)
I opted for the sausage Detroit style with fennel sausage, pecorino, Calabrian chiles and garlic. I also really wanted to try their starter of mushroom arancini, because I’m a sucker for balls that I can dip into sauce. My delivery driver dropped it off at my house and everything looked amazing so I couldn’t wait to dig in.
The star here were the arancini. Even after sitting in a delivery car for a bit, they were hot, crispy and delicious. And the dipping sauce was stellar as it was decadently creamy with a hint of spice. The pizza was nice, and I loved the flavor of the toppings, but the crust definitely wasn’t as good as other places in the city that specialize in Detroit-style pizza.
I’m a big fan of Pie Punks, and I’m sure I’ll order again, but I will probably try the thinner round pizzas instead! But those arancini are staying on my list for years, and as they also specialize in natural wines, it might be fun to dine in and give that a try. If you’re in Soma and need a fun pizza place, I think Pie Punks might be for you!
