I felt like I passed by Luke’s Lobster quite a lot while it was coming to fruition. This was going to be the first location of Luke’s that would be in California! Of course, I was interested as I do love lobster pretty much all the time. Once it opened, I knew I was going to have to find my way here to give the lobster roll a try. Finally, one night, after my friend wanted to meet for drinks, we stumbled into Luke’s to see if they would be able to make the lobster roll of my dreams.
The theme is very nautical (which is really no surprise). The menu itself also isn’t that extensive, as it mostly contains lobster, shrimp and crab rolls, a lobster salad, a couple of soups and a few sides. Often simpler can be better in these situations, but I wanted to try lots of things out, so I almost went for the combination which is 1/2 of each of the three types of rolls. However, the lure of the new jumbo roll won out, plus they offer the lobster roll with truffle butter, so for what seemed like the ultimate decadence at the end of the day, I decided on adding that to my jumbo roll. We also got some fries and some coleslaw to share, and a bottle of wine. The wine list really isn’t huge either, with a couple of wines that are on tap, two in a can, and two bottles. Luckily, the wine wasn’t outrageously priced, so drinking average wine didn’t feel so bad.
The food came out fairly quickly and we dug in. The rolls were really tasty and piled high with lobster meat which is good considering we got the jumbo-sized rolls. The bread was slightly toasted adding a nice bit of texture, and the truffle butter was just there as a hint and not overpowering. The lobster was mostly cooked well, but there were a few tough pieces. The coleslaw was pretty disappointing though, and not something I would recommend, nor were the fries anything special.
We left fairly satisfied with the amount of food, but we also decided that it’s not really a place we’d hurry to come back to. I’d be tempted to swing in and try the salad perhaps, but the sides were really leaving me wanting something more than what I was paying for. That being said, the workers there were incredibly friendly and helpful so it made the overall experience pretty fun.
Score: 3.5/5
Recommendation: Lobster roll with truffle butter (go for the decadence!)
