Is quesabirria still trending? I remember there was a time when basically every Instagram account had some sort of quesabirria featured as the new in food to try. I do sometimes follow trends, but really, I follow good food, and good food is what brought me back to La Vaca Birria. I tried a single quesabirria here on a food tour of the Mission, and it was so amazing, I knew I was going to have to bring my sister and her husband back when they came out to visit.
Birria is traditionally made from beef and/or goat, and I was told on the tour that these were goat, which made my sister and her husband a bit apprehensive, but at the venue the staff assured me they make it out of beef, so everyone dug in to try them. They were so well received, we definitely decided to order more food to try. The meat is really soft and tender, and the melty cheese really goes well with the crispy griddled taco shell. Add in the consume to dip, and you have a really savory bit of mexican food to put in your mouth.
We tried some more of the dishes on the menu, including the chicken empanadas, the birria fries, a carne asasda taco and more quesabirria, this time with beans and rice. The birria fries were tasty, but they were a bit big and quite rich. With all the food we ordered, it was a bit hard to finish them. The carne asada taco was fine, but honestly, I’d probably not get it again. The empanadas were fantastic, as they were very crispy and had an amazing filling.
Gourmet it isn’t, but sometimes you just want some simple and tasty food. Everyone really enjoyed everything they had, and we left very full for not a whole lot of money. They have an entire pizza menu as well, including birria pizza, which is definitely something I want to come back for. If you’re in the mission and you’re in the mood to try some quesabirria, La Vaca Birria won’t let you down. It’s in the old Discolandia building there, so you’ve got a bit of history if you go too! After you’re done, check out the murals nearby, and you have a weekend lunch and activity sorted!
Score: 4/5
Suggestion: Honestly, just get the quesabirria. Or two or three.
