Being a food blogger during a crisis is hard! Trying to stay safe while enjoying some of the food around the bay area is definitely a mixed bag. And while there is some amazing takeout like from places like San Ho Won (I’ve ordered twice now, so if you haven’t tried it yet, you should order today), it’s not always easy. But I’m trying new things and this week I’m sharing the amazing Community Food Box I had from La Cocina.
La Cocina supports minority restaurants, so the food box is a selection of foods that come from those places. Every box is different, although there may be some overlap sometimes, and while the price tag may seem hefty at $110 per box, there is definitely enough food in the box to spread out over several meals (or more if you decide to supplement with some of your own side dishes or salads). There are also two boxes to choose from: Veggie or omnivore depending on your personal food tastes! My box from a few weeks ago consisted of the following (image courtesy of their website):
I was really excited to check it out when I got home, and it definitely was full of goodies! The box contained mostly refrigerated things that needed to be eaten within the week, but also some frozen items I could make a few weeks later and even some amazing black sesame brittle.
I have to say that pretty much everything was delicious. The pork mole with beans was the first thing I had, and I served it with the sopaipillas (and while I love a New Mexico style sopaipilla, I was very happy with this version of the fry bread as well). I had the kuku with breakfast, and I do love a great kuku as it’s been on my list of things to try making at home for ages. The veggie rolls were really easy to make. Honestly, it was well worth the money I spent on it. All the food comes with instructions on how to prepare at home, so I didn’t feel worried about reheating at all! I also portioned out the food over about five meals (with a bit of supplements) so the price really isn’t outrageous.
This community food box is definitely something that I’m going to keep getting in the future. It was a great way to try food from many of the local businesses in San Francisco, as well as keeping them in business during this time. It looks like they are now offering a variety of different sizes as well, in case you don’t want to try the full priced box. If you want to try one of your own, you can buy them here for pickup or delivery with a small fee.
