Since my favorite Mexican in San Francisco closed down (R.I.P. Copas), I’ve had the yen for some amazing and delicious Mexican food. Honestly, I don’t care if it’s quick and easy Mexican or a bit more classy, as long as it tastes good and has the flavors of Mexico that I’ve grown to love. One day on Instagram, my favorite wine bar in Bayview was showing off a tostada delivery from Frank Grizzly’s, and it immediately went on the list. I quickly found myself on the T Line headed down to see if it was as good as it looked.
I ordered the tostada plate (with chipotle chicken) and a quesabirria. I was concerned it might be a bit much, but I wanted to try both, so I figured why not? Their plates come with rice, beans and a salad, and honestly, while the salad was nice, the rice and beans felt uninteresting and mostly filler, so perhaps the plate is not the right way to go.
That being said, the tostada was magical. The chicken was tender and delicious, plus they put a crunchy cheese shell on the tortilla so everything was extra crispy in my mouth. The rest of the toppings were fresh and delicious with some amazing pickled onions. The quesabirria was also superb, with oozy cheese and a delicious, slightly spicy stew inside. Of course, it was served with the classic accompaniment of consume, and I scarfed it down. The sauces served with it also added a depth of flavor and helped liven up the rice and beans.
I left Frank Grizzly’s a very happy camper. It’s a bit far south, but if you’re out in the Bayview anyway (perhaps for wine?), it’s definitely worthwhile to make a detour for some delicious and fresh California-Mexican food. The service was also very friendly and welcoming, so I’m sure I’ll be back to try even more!
Score: 4.5/5
Recommendation: The tostadas are my top pick!
