While living in London, I had a few friends that were really into KFC (that’s Korean Fried Chicken, not the fast food restaurant, although I had several friends that were into that too). I also grew to appreciate it when trying several places with them, and the few places I tried here in San Francisco just didn’t stand up to the amazing chicken I loved in London. So, when I saw that the Seoulful Korean Fried Chicken truck was going to be near my house, I decided to hurry over there to give it a try.
Browsing the menu, I was interested in trying many of the options that were available. The sandwich sounded good, but I decided I should go for the dark meat option of a leg and thigh because really, that’s where you get the juiciest chicken with the best flavor. They offer their chicken with fries (which is always tempting), japchae (korean glass noodles) or rice and slaw. I went for rice and slaw and decided to upgrade mine to the kimchee fried rice for just a couple more dollars. They also offer a variety of sauces, and I was torn between the spicy glaze and the salt and pepper (both sounded amazing). I did end up going for the spicy glaze with the hope that I wasn’t going to have fomo for not getting salt and pepper.
The chicken smelled and looked fantastic. There was a very crispy coating on it that really didn’t get too destroyed from the sauce on top and the walk from the truck to my house. The chicken was also really moist inside and the sauce definitely was what I was hoping it would be with the spice levels…not too spicy, but with a good all around Korean hit in your mouth. They also threw in some gochujang mayo, which was unnecessary, but also didn’t hurt to dip the chicken into. The slaw was really top notch. It was really light and refreshing with just a hint of something spicy in it every once in awhile (but I’m also a huge fan of a lightly dressed salad to balance the heaviness of the spice and the grease from frying). The kimchi fried rice was kinda soggy, but the flavor was really fantastic and it was even better when some of the chicken sauce dripped down into it.
This definitely fulfilled my KFC craving and then some. I’m still kind of thinking about it when I write this. I would definitely come back here and try more stuff on the menu, including giving the salt and pepper chicken a try. I may avoid the kimchi rice as while it had good flavor, it was really kind of mushy. I’m really glad I’m finding some food trucks in San Francisco that are high quality, and I’m looking forward to finding even more of them!
Score: 4.5/5
Recommendation: Dark meat with spicy glaze is a winner in my book!
YUM! Too bad that the rice got soggy (I LOVE kimchi fried rice) but this looks so fantastic and I’m stoked that it tasted just as good! I’ll have to look out for this truck next time I’m in SF!
It’s even sometimes within a few blocks from my house, so that’s super dangerous!
