I had another opportunity to check out some of the food trucks at Spark Social SF, and as it was a fairly warm day, I decided that some Poke sounded like it would be a great, light, refreshing lunch. What they have on offer seems quite simple, but they do offer a fairly customizable bowl so it seems like you could enjoy a variety of food if you really wanted to try different things. The base options are quite easy, either brown rice, white rice or salad (or a mixture of half and half of two of them). From there, it’s choosing your proteins and they have quite a selection of fish. Finally, you get to choose any number of free toppings you like, or you can add avocado or mango for an additional cost. They also have five different sauces you can choose from (again, any or all).
I decided that I wanted half brown rice and half salad with marinated salmon and cooked octopus (because I do love it, and apparently I’m a bit of a glutton for punishment because I also know how difficult it is to actually cook well). I chose all the free toppings (because I am not picky, and it’s much easier than trying to choose a few). I also decided to go with some spicy mayo to finish it off.
It did look pretty spectacular in the bowl when I sat down to eat it. The salmon was nice, but the octopus was overcooked and rubbery. It was nice having a wide range of toppings as it just added a bit of different flavor profiles to every bite. I enjoyed the poke bowl, but it also wasn’t amazing. I suppose it might be difficult to really make a wow-worthy poke bowl from a food truck though. I probably would have it again, but I also wouldn’t really expect it to be great, just a nice bowl of fish with a plethora of toppings.
Score: 3/5
Recommendation: Just get it any way you want it as the variety is endless
