It’s time to explore more of the food trucks around San Francisco. This time I tried out Hiyaaa, an asian fusion food truck. (I imagine Hiyaaa is supposed to be the sound that people used to make when pretending to do some sort of martial arts in films? I’m not too sure.) I really wanted to give it a try as they do a kimchi burrito, and as Asian fusion goes, I’m down for all the Asian flavors rolled up into a tortilla for easy eating. (I even had my own British burrito concept at one point, mostly because I’m still waiting for someone to develop that Fish and Chips burrito that’s is going to take the world by storm.) Sadly, they were completely out of the burrito when I showed up, so I quickly went for the bun instead.
The bun basically turns out to be a banh mi sandwich, and I’m usually a huge fan of them, but there is a banh mi place that I frequent that does them cheaply and deliciously, so I’m a bit hesitant to try out new places. I ordered it with the spicy pork, and I also went for the salt and pepper fries to have on the side. I do need to point out at this moment that I noticed that they have quite a big overlap of menu items with Seoulful Korean Fried Chicken (including fried chicken, salt and pepper fries, and kimchi fried rice), so I am fairly convinced that it’s the same group that does both trucks. But would it be as good as the chicken?
The banh mi was quite good sized, so that was definitely a plus. At least the extra price over my usual place meant I was getting something. The fries were a bit boring honestly as they were slightly undercooked and had absolutely no heat. The pork was tasty, but I felt like the banh mi was a bit lacking in some ways, so I’m not sure I’d go that route if I went back again. It definitely wasn’t the best one I’ve eaten, but I’ve also had worse. So for me, Hiyaaa was a bit middle of the road. It wasn’t terrible, but it didn’t really wow me either.
Rating: 3/5
Recommendation: If it is the same group, just go for fried chicken.
