I miss fish and chips. There’s just something special about the way they do it in the UK that they just can’t seem to replicate in the US. It doesn’t stop me from wanting to find a place that does it well, however, so when I saw Haley McNicholl’s food truck, I figured it might be a great place to try it. (Even if I was a bit underwhelmed by the fish at The Codmother.) So one day for lunch I swung by and ordered the fish and chips ($13) to give it a try.
I was actually quite pleasantly surprised when I opened the box and saw that the fish wasn’t the usual American style of long, thin goujons, and the two pieces of fish were of pretty good size. They were also really delicious, as they were crisp, well-seasoned and really just melted in the mouth. Sadly, the chips were a huge disappointment as they were just your bog standard crinkle cut fry, and not really that great.
If I had a huge craving for fish and chips, I might come back (although maybe I just need to suck it up and learn to make it myself). Or perhaps if they did a fish sandwich, I’d be incredibly happy as I can imagine how good it would be with that nearly perfect fish. They also had scotch eggs on the menu, so I may have to come back just to give those a try. Or their burger for The Great Burger Hunt.
