There are so many Detroit-style pizza places in San Francisco now that it’s starting to get a bit overwhelming. Which are good and which are just okay? A friend texted me and wanted to know my favorite, so I told him, and he countered with Cellarmaker House of Pizza. I had heard of it, but never really had gotten around to trying it, so when the other half was on a work trip recently, I grabbed a pizza to give it a try.
They definitely provide a selection of pizza from the standard cheese or pepperoni to some more exotic flavors. When I looked at the menu, they had pizza with giant shrimp on top! It definitely looked interesting (and hard to eat!), but I opted for one that just had a lot of toppings on it, as that is my favorite thing about pizza! It looks like they change the menu up fairly regularly, as some of the pizzas available when I ordered have changed, for example from a carbonara pizza into a mapo eggplant pizza. Variety is awesome I always say. They also have salads and appetizers if you plan on sharing and want to have a few more things!
When I got the pizza it looked fantastic, but we all know it matters how it eats, and it ate pretty well also! The crust was perfect and the burnt cheese on the outside was just the right flavor and texture. The toppings were also pretty good, so it definitely is giving some of the other top contenders in San Francisco a run for their money at the moment. Given the changing selection, I’ll probably give them another try in the future if I’m on my own. They are open for takeout or delivery so head down or use the apps and get a pizza stat!
Score: 4.5/5
Recommendation: Give one of the weird ones a try if they are to your taste!
