I love a tasty baked good and I love fried chicken sandwiches, so when I found out that Biscuit Bender did both for brunch, I knew I was going to have to try it out. What is a biscuit bender though? In my head, I view it as the sixth elemental bender out of the Avatar series. I mean being a fire bender or metal bender sounds cool and all, but who really wouldn’t want to be able to bend a biscuit to your whims? Maybe it’s something else entirely. What I do know is Biscuit Bender was conveniently located just a few blocks from my old apartment, so it was easy to head out here one weekend and grab a selection of things to try at home.
The owner of Biscuit Bender has an interesting past from Veterinary Sciences (a bit like me who thought once upon a time that he could attend vet school, but realized very early it wasn’t the path for me) to culinary school. After a few stints at some local places, including several years at the popular San Francisco brunch staple, Brenda’s, he branched out on his own to bring his own southern staples to the Bay.
The location isn’t big, but it’s a pandemic, so everything was take out anyway. I wanted to try a selection, so I ordered the chicken sandwich for myself ($12), and the other half got the eggs benedict with bacon ($10). I also ordered a sticky bun ($6) and a biscuit with molten cheddar gravy ($6). Needless to say, there were a lot of biscuits at our house for breakfast that day.
Everything was incredibly tasty too! The biscuits were heavenly, and very tender, which honestly, made eating the sandwich quite difficult as the biscuit fell apart. The mess was completely worth it though. It wasn’t the best chicken sandwich I’ve had in the bay area, but it definitely hit the spot! The eggs benedict were also very good, although it was more like biscuits and gravy plus eggs and bacon than a true eggs benedict. Because of that, the biscuit and gravy ended up just being identical to the benedict, sans the eggs and bacon so it’s definitely not something necessary to double up on. Finally, the sticky bun was flaky and sweet and a great breakfast “dessert” to all the savory dishes.
Biscuit Bender puts out a pretty solid biscuit, and a decadent brunch. I mean, I guess I don’t think of southern food as being the lightest, so it’s not a surprise, but it sure does make for excellent hangover fare. If you happen to live in the Dogpatch, and you’re looking for some delicious baked goods or brunch to go, Biscuit Bender is definitely a solid option!
Score: 4/5
